Reading recs for Tales of the Empire
So, you’ve finished Tales of the Empire and want more stories with Dathomirian Nightsisters and Imperial Inquisitors. You’ve come to the right place for book recommendations.
Dark Disciple: What is there to say about this masterpiece that I haven’t said before? It’s dark, intense, sexy, and gut-wrenching. It absolutely rewrote the parts of my brain that thought I had strong opinions about The Clone Wars and Asajj Ventress. While Ventress carries trauma as a former Nightsister, a Sith apprentice, and a bounty hunter, she discovers her true calling through her reluctant partnership and eventual love story with Quinlan Vos.
Jedi: Battle Scars: The same simmering rage felt by Morgan Elsbeth in Tales of the Empire is very much present in Merrin — a member of the Stinger Mantis crew and a survivor of General Grievous’s massacre of the Nightsisters. We spend a lot of time inside Merrin’s head in Jedi: Battle Scars as she and the crew fight, make up, and navigate new lives in a dangerous galaxy.
Inquisitor: Rise of the Red Blade: Another masterpiece of Star Wars literature, Rise of the Red Blade follows Iskat Akaris from the first days of the Clone Wars through Order 66 and becoming an Inquisitor. This book is also dark, violent, heartbreaking, and mind-altering. It stars a woman behaving badly whom you can’t help but root for.
Medstar I and II — Battle Surgeons and Jedi Healer: Barriss Offee makes brief appearances in a few Star Wars books, but she’s the star of the Medstar duology. These two books are set during the height of the Clone Wars when Barriss is stationed on a swampy planet to work alongside a surgeon and help heal clone troopers and others fighting for control of a priceless plant resource. Since these books are part of Legends, the Jedi Padawan’s story here isn’t part of the current canon. But they’re go-to reads for more Barriss Offee content.
